Compound Sentence
A
compound sentence has two independent clauses or sentences. The independent
clauses can be joined by a coordinating conjunction such as and, so, or, but, for, nor and yet.
How
to make a compound sentence? When you
have two or more short, simple sentences which are of equal weight, you can
join them together using special words called coordinating conjunctions.
Examples Compound Sentences with
Coordinating Conjunctions
1. They
got there early, and they got really
good seats.
And
joins sentences that are alike.
2. Everyone
was busy, so I went to the movie
alone.
So
joins sentences when the second sentences express the result of something
described in the first sentences.
3. I
think I will buy the red car, or I
will lease the blue one.
Or
joins sentences that give choices or alternatives.
4. I
really want to go to work, but I am
too sick to drive.
But
joins sentences that are opposite or show contrast.
5. She
did not cheat on the test, for it
was not the right thing to do.
For has same meaning as because; use
for to introduce a reason or case.
6. I
was scared, yet I was also curious
about the old lady.
Yet has approximately the same meaning
as but; that is, it shows contract or join opposites. Use yet when the second
part of sentence says something unexpected or surprising.
7. The
book isn’t very long, nor is it
difficult to read.
Nor
means “not this and not that’; use not to join two negative sentences.
note: Use question word order after
not. Place helping verb (is, does, did,
can, will etc.) before the subject.
