MORPHOSYNTAX INTRODUCTION : MEETING 2

1. Please read the material about introduction of morpheme and syntax

MORPHEME
Morpheme is the smallest meaningful unit in the grammar of language.
Example:
1.      Unladylike
This word consist of three morphemes (un-lady-like), and four syllable (un-la-dy-like)
Un, indicated of “no”
Lady, means female adult human
Like, refers to having characteristic of something
2.      Cats
This word has two morphemes (cat-s), a syllable (cats)
Cat, means animal (pet)
-s, a plural marker on nouns
Based on the examples above (number 2), the word cats contain as two morphemes (cat, -s). that is morphological structure of words is largely independent of their phonological structure (their division into sound, syllable and rhythmic units).
Only speech (so far as we know) is analyzable in two parallel ways, into units that contribute to meaning (morphemes, words, phrases etc) and units that are individually meaningless (sound, syllables etc). The implication of this property of human language (its so called duality of patterning)

SYNTAX
According to the experts:
-          Syntax is the study of the principles and processes by which sentences are constructed in particular languages. Syntatic in investigation of a given language has as its goal the construction of a grammar that can be viewed as a device of the sentences of the language under analysis (Noam Chomsky, syntactic structures, 1971)
In the general:
-          In linguistic, syntax refers to the rules that govern the ways in which words combine of a form phrases, clauses and sentences.
-          Syntax can be defined as the arrangement of words in a sentence. The term syntax is also used to mean the study of syntactic properties of a language.
-          Syntax is one of the major components of grammar. Traditionally, linguists have recognized a basic distinction between syntax and morphology (which is primarily concerned with the internal structures of words). However, this distinction has been somewhat disrupted by recent research in lexicogrammar.
In sort sentence:
-          Syntax is a set of rules in a language or grammatical structure of words and phrases to create coherent sentences. It dictates how words from different parts of speech are put together in order to covey a complete thought. The adjective of syntax is syntactic.
