COMPLEX SENTENCES

1. Contains an independent clause and dependent clause* (sometimes more one dependent clause)
2. Dependent clause begins with a subordinating conjunction

An independent clause

An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb. Its express a complete though. An independent clause is a sentence.

It expresses a complete though. It could stand on its own as separate sentence.

The example is Jim studied in the cafeteria for his writing quiz.

A Dependent clause

A dependent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express complete sentences. Often a dependent clause is marked by a dependent marker word.

It does not express a complete though. It could not stand alone as a complete sentence.

The example is When Jim studied in the cafeteria for his chemistry quiz…. (not a sentence)

Example  of  COMPLEX sentences:

1. Because the boys went to the park, they did not go to the zoo. (dependent clause, independent clause) 

The boys did not go to the zoo because they went to the park. (independent clause dependent clause)

2. Because it is raining, we have an umbrella.

We have an umbrella because it is raining.

3. When I read a novel, I look for careful attention.

I look for careful attention to detail when I read a novel.

Subordinating conjunction   :

1. Time subordinators

after, as*, as soon as, before, since, until, when, whenever, and while

2. Reason Subordinators

because, since, and as*

3. Place Subordinators

where and whenever

4. Another Subordinating

although

note: * as can be either a time subordinators or reason subordinator.
