EXAMPLE

1. COULD

Aji       : Why don’t we use ZOOM to learn structure? 

Wafa   : We could use ZOOM.

 Aji has SUGGESTION to use ZOOM as the learning method. If  Aji wants to use it, please, but if he do not want, he could avoid the SUGGESTION.

Aji       : I am so hungry.

Wafa   : We could go to the canteen after structure class.

Wafa suggest his friend go to the canteen after structure class. It will happen if, Aji agree with Wafa’s SUGGESTION. If Aji, prefer go to another place is it ok…. Because it just SUGGESTION.

2. SHOULD

Aji       : I have trouble to understand this material.

Wafa   : You could ask your lecturer.

The first speaker has problem to understand the material. Then, the second speaker has SUGGESTION to ask Aji’s Problem with the lecturer. It’s just SUGGESTION not more. There is no effect.

3. SHOULD HAVE

Aji       : I am headache since last night.

Wafa   : You should have gone to the doctor this morning.

Wafa suggest Aji went the doctor when he headache. It was possible for Aji went to the doctor. If Aji went to the doctor, he will be okay now.

Note: Here, in the sentences, we use could have + V3, the situation in the past.

The situation calls as hindsight advice (peninjauan sugesti/saran yang mestinya harus dilakukan di masa lalu. Jika tidak dilaukan memiliki dampak).

Jika Aji telah pergi ke dokter pagi ini, Aji tidak akan sakit kepala. Faktanya, pada saat Aji bercerita ke Wafa (situasi sudah malam pukul 20.00), wafa tidak juga kedokter. Wafa hanya mengeluh jika dia sakit kepala sejak kemarin malam.

4. COULD HAVE

Aji       : I just sleep at home last Saturday. I am bored

Wafa   : You could have followed me at Alun-Alun Nganjuk.

Aji told Wafa about his Saturday. It was bored. In the contrary, Wafa enjoyed his last Saturday with his friends at alun-alun. If, Wafa known th Aji had no plan in last Saturday, that was better for Aji followed Wafa in Alun-Alun.

Note: this situation calls as hindsight possibilities (peninjauan saran yang kemungkinan dapat dilakukan di masa lampau)

Aji merasa bosan dengan akhir pekannya dengan hanya tidur di kamar.

Sedangkan wafa menikmati akhir pekannya bersama teman-temannya di alun-alaun. Jika wafa mengetahui bahwa Aji tidak memiliki acara di akhir minggu, ada baiknya Aji ikut bergabung dengan Wafa ke alun-alaun. Jika hal ini terjadi maka Aji tidak memiliki akhir pecan yang membosankan.
